Course preferences

How many course preferences can I choose?

You can choose up to nine course preferences.

If you are interested in only one course, then enter only that course. If you are interested in several courses enter these in order of preference up to the maximum of nine preferences.

For more information about choosing courses, read Choosing courses. For more information about course costs read Course costs and financial assistance.

Courses available in 2009
The Australian Government is phasing out places in undergraduate domestic fee-paying (DFEE) courses from 1 January 2009.

Therefore there are no DFEE courses available for 2009 admissions.*

All courses available in 2009 are Commonwealth-supported place (CSP) courses. Remember that CSP courses used to be called HECS courses – you only have to pay part of the cost of your course.

*There are some exceptions, including arrangements for continuing and deferred students, for students who enrol in employer-reserved places and for students who have consumed their Student Learning Entitlement (SLE).

What should I remember when entering my preferences?

When considering your preferences, think about what you would really like to do, balanced by a realistic appraisal of courses for which you may qualify for admission.

The course search shows the UAI cut-offs that were required by Year 12 applicants for entry into each course in the Main Round in 2008. Use these UAI cut-offs as a guide when considering your preferences. Remember that the cut-offs indicate the lowest UAI accepted for entry into the course - they do not represent the average ability of the students accepted for the course.

The UAI cut-offs for entry in 2009 will not be known until selection is actually made during the offer rounds. UAI cut-offs are determined by the number of places available in the course, the number of applicants for the course, and the quality of those applicants. For more information read Australian and New Zealand secondary studies.

Also check the attendance pattern of each course when listing your preferences. The attendance pattern (ie full-time, part-time, distance education) for each course is set out in the course search results and the course descriptions. Some institutions allow you to change attendance patterns; others do not. For more information contact the relevant institutions.

Does the order in which I enter my preferences matter?

Yes. During the selection process your preferences are considered in the order in which you have listed them on your application. If there is no place available in the course listed as your first preference, your second preference will be considered and so on until an offer can be made or you have no more preferences.

    Make sure you:
  • enter your preferences in the order in which you would like to receive an offer
  • enter the course you would most like to do first, then the course you would next prefer to do, and so on
  • enter only courses for which you would accept an offer.

Are all my preferences given equal consideration?

Yes. The selection process is based on the system that if you are not selected for your first preference, you will be considered equally with all other eligible applicants for your second preference and so on.

Your chance of being selected for a particular course is not reduced because you placed a course as a lower order preference. No applicant will be selected for a course simply because she or he entered that course as a higher order preference.

For example:
Applicant A does not qualify for an offer to courses listed as preferences 1, 2 or 3, and has course 111111 as preference 4. If applicant A is eligible and is more competitive than applicants B and C who have listed course 111111 as their first preference, then applicant A will receive an offer before applicants B and C.

Changing your course preferences

How to change your preferences

You can change your preferences through Online applicant services on this website. You cannot change your preferences by telephone, letter, fax or email.

Closing dates

You can add, delete, or change the order of your preferences as many times as you like during the periods shown below.

Change of preferences accepted for consideration in:
Main Round: Mid-August 2008 – Wed 7 January 2009
Late Round: Wed 21 January – Tue 27 January 2009
Final Round: Wed 4 January – Thu 5 February 2009

On all of these closing dates (ie Wednesday 7 January, Tuesday 27 January and Thursday 5 February) changes close at midnight.

Remember that some courses, particularly those with additional selection criteria, have closing dates earlier than UAC closing dates. This means that you must have the course as a preference by the course closing date. Don't waste a preference - check the course search for courses with early closing dates.

Changing preferences before and after each offer round

If you receive an offer in any round you can change your preferences for the next offer round up until the closing date for the next round.

Examples:
If you receive a Preliminary Round offer you can change your preferences for the Main Round until Wednesday 7 January 2009.

If you receive an offer in the Main Round you can change your preferences for the Late Round until Tuesday 27 January 2009.

If you receive an offer in the Late Round you can change your preferences for the Final Round until Thursday 5 February 2009.

For further information about offer rounds read Offers and enrolment.

How many offers can I receive?

In each offer round you may receive one offer to the highest preference for which you are eligible and competitive enough.

For example:
If you are eligible and competitive enough for the first preference you have listed, you will be made an offer to that course and the rest of your preferences will not be considered. If, however, you are not eligible for the first or second preferences you have listed, but are eligible and competitive enough for your third preference, you will be made an offer to your third preference and the rest of your preferences will not be considered.
